Working Hard

Bellus watched Val’s red eyes narrow onto the paperwork. He scribbled down some notes.

Bellus sighed and ran a hand through his teal hair. He leaned back in the chair, leaning to it creak. Valerius’ eyes shot to Bellus. Neither said anything for a moment. “Do you have to do that now?” Val eventually asked.

“What?” Bellus asked, avoiding Val’s eyes. “You mean stretch?”

Val looked back to his work, not replying. Bellus stood up and walked around Valerius’ office. He felt the leaves on the plant, smelling its earthy scent. He then leaned on the Soul Vault. “So this is where you keep souls?” Bellus asked.

“Yep,” Val replied.

Bellus felt the wall, but noticed Val wasn’t looking at him. He felt the frustration build in his fingertips, but kept his face stony. He walked over to Val, pretending to read the bookcase behind where he sat. He ran a hand through Val’s pink and black hair, teasing the tip of his horn with his finger. “Stop that,” Val said.

“Stop what?” Bel asked, draping another hand across Val’s chest.

“I’m not going to be much longer,” Val explained. “Grab a book and read or something.”

“This book?” Bel asked, taking a ledger that Val had his finger on.

Val ripped the book from Bellus’ hands. “No, not that one,” he said, sharply.

Bellus walked elegantly over to the fridge and opened the door to investigate its contents. He then moved to the drawer to try the same thing. While there was nothing too interesting, he did notice Valerius grow tenser with every movement he made. He tried to open another set of drawers but found it locked. So he walked back to the bookshelf. Bel ran a finger along Valerius thigh only to get swatted away.

“Fine,” Bel said. “I know when I’m not wanted.”

He took a book from the shelf and walked over to the couch. Val didn’t even acknowledge his movements. So Bel undressed quickly, folding his clothes and leaving them on top of the locked set of drawers. He then opened the book only to use it to cover his testicles from Val’s sight.

He cleared his throat.

Val didn’t raise his eyes.

Bellus considered reading but didn’t want the effect to be ruined. So he leaned his head back on the armrest and stared at the ceiling, counting the odd specks that lay there. When he looked back at Valerius, he found Valerius staring back at him.

“Ihavetofinishthesequick.”

Bel stared at Val stormed through the rest of his work quickly. Bellus smirked, surprised that Val was still dedicated enough to finish his work before pleasuring Bel.

So Bel stretched out his toes and waited.

And waited.

And then Valerius wandered over, nuzzling Bellus before kissing his lips lightly.

“I’ve really got to get out of these clothes,” Val stated, face serious.

Bel replied, “Yes, I think that would be the most productive option.”

Tapping Watermelons

“You don’t have to follow me to the market,” Jaimie said.

Milk said nothing, just stared blankly at Jaimie. He stared back, just as firmly and blankly. She started to walk out of the doorway, but he blocked her.

They stared.

Milk blinked before zipping up her sweatshirt, to hide her breasts. Then they began walking. Jaimie had become used to Milk’s presence. It was a little cramped with her there, but while she was once an advocate of change and everything she hated, she’d now become a permanent fixture in his somewhat too petite apartment. He wasn’t sure what he’d do without her interrogations about inane things.

But her television commentary would need work. Whenever they’d watch TV together he’d have to explain every little detail to her, right down to hand gestures.

He liked shopping at the market though. She’d ask how to pick ripe fruit (she liked tapping the watermelons) and he’d get to explain the simple things.

Milk walked closely at his heels, sometimes stepping on the heels of his shoes. He grabbed her hand to keep her from accidentally causing him to step out of his shoes. It had happened before, and he had no desire to taste concrete today.

“Why is it so important that I cover up?” Milk asked. “I don’t understand.”

Milk grabbed at her chest to emphasize what she was talking about, and Jaimie patted her hands off her own chest. This is a conversation they had many times before.

“They’re always out and open in your magazines,” Milk said. He had gotten used to her reading everything in sight to try to understand their culture better. It was easier to just let her read them than to hide them or quit them completely. “But they’re always bigger in your magazines. Why are they so huge? Sometimes I think they’d be as big as my head.”

“Sometimes they’re not real,” Jaimie said. “Like, they’ve put stuff under the skin to make them bigger. And sometimes people take hormones to make them bigger. And sometimes they just come out big.”

“Is larger considered better?” Milk asked. “Your magazine claims what you have is supposed to be bigger, but you always yell at me when I open the door when you’re using the bathroom.”

“Everyone has their own preferences,” Jaimie said. “Some women end up getting reductions.” Jaimie made movements with his hands showing breasts getting smaller to illustrate his point.

“What do you prefer?” Milk asked.

“I just prefer seeing them,” Jaimie said.

They walked in silence again. Milk understood the concept of holding hands in a parent/child way. Jaimie told her they held hands so she didn’t get lost. She was prone to tripping over things or slipping, so he found it more productive to hold her hand to keep her moving in the right direction. If she tripped he’d often lift her back to her feet.

“Wait,” Milk said, after they neared the market. “If you prefer seeing them, why do I have to cover them up?”

Jaimie exhaled, trying to figure out the quickest route to ending this conversation. “Because I don’t want you to share them with everyone else.”

Milk just nodded. She understood that humans tended to be selfish, especially in this period.

When they walked into the market, the old bitch eyed him again. It probably didn’t help that their hands were locked together. “Also,” Jaimie started, lowering his voice, “you can’t let her see him.”

Milk looked to the old bitch.

“She’ll think I’m sexually abusing you or something,” Jaimie said. “And you don’t want to get taken away from me, do you?”

Milk shook her head. She couldn’t be separated from him, but she was also losing her voice. She hated that she couldn’t ask as many questions as her brain wanted to ask.

But she definitely didn’t like the idea of being away from him. She clutched both hands to his, leaning close to him and eyeing the old bitch. Seeing her concern, he withdrew his hand from hers and draped it across her shoulders, pulling her close. She seemed to relax beneath his grip.

“Come on,” he said. “Let’s go tap the watermelons.”

sutton be: rough draft

“You don’t have to follow me to the market,” Jaimie said.

They both walked in the open, Milk determined to stay by Jaimie’s side. “No, I do,” Milk insisted. “I need to protect you.”

Jaimie felt his cheeks burn as he looked down to his friend. Sometimes he liked the idea of her protecting him, where he could just sit in his apartment and Milk could protect him from the ever-changing world. He had already accepted that she would stay with him forever. He was counting on it. He wasn’t sure how to cope without her.

“Well, you could have at least put on a shirt,” Jaimie said.

“I am wearing a shirt,” Milk said.

“Okay just stop,” Jaimie said.

Milk stopped walking, but her white eyes stayed locked on Jaimie. It was clear to him that if he kept walking, she’d follow anyway.

He knelt down in front of her and zipped up her sweater, making sure her chest was firmly covered. He may have caught a glimpse too, but he wouldn’t have admitted it. Milk, of course, was completely unconcerned.

“Now it’ll be too bulky,” Milk noted.

“That’s why some people wear t-shirts,” Jaimie replied, beginning to walk again.

Milk scoffed and walked closely at his heels. “Why is it so important that I cover up?” Milk asked. “I don’t understand, don’t you like them?”

Milk grabbed at her chest to emphasize what she was talking about, and Jaimie patted her hands off her own chest. This is a conversation they had many times before.

“They’re too small, aren’t they,” Milk stated. “But if they were big they would get in the way and flop out of my sweater and be all awkward. They are the perfect size for function.”

“I like your breasts!” Jaimie said, not immediately realizing he was close to shouting. He lowered his voice as passerbys gawked at him. “I mean, I agree, they’re functional and, uh, pert, but you can’t just go showing them off. Other women might get jealous.”

“In all your magazines they have big ones,” Milk said. “Are you sure it isn’t the size?”

Jaimie cleared his throat. “I am sure,” he said. “Listen, if you keep on like this, that old bitch at the market will think I’m sexually abusing you or something. She already thinks I’m a pedophile which I’m not.”

“I just wish other shirts were more comfortable,” she said. “And sometimes I get the impression that clothes are sexier than being naked. Don’t you find that? I find myself more attracted to you in what you’re wearing now than completely naked. Too many bits flop about, but right now you’re all put together and smart.”

He stopped walking. “When did you see me naked?” Jaimie asked.

Milk shrugged. “When you were taking a shower and again when you were using the bathroom and another time you were getting ready for bed and once you were sitting at your computer naked which I didn’t understand so I pretended not to see you.”

“You can’t spy on me Milk!” Jaimie said, holding his head in frustration. “You should let me know when you have your eye on me.”

“But I like watching you,” Milk said as they arrived in the market. Jaimie tried to ignore the gaze of the ol’ bitch. “And I’ve been meaning to ask you. You know how sometimes I curl up with you in bed and you’re all warm and soft and then you get mad at me for cuddling up with you and nuzzling you?”

Jaimie hunched over, trying to make himself less noticeable. “Lower your voice, Milk.”

Milk repeated the statements with her voice lowered, watching the red come back into Jaimie’s pale cheeks. She liked it when that happened.

“Milk I heard you. I know what you mean.”

“Well, I want to try kissing,” she said. “When people kiss they say they feel about each other like I feel about you and I know you feel the same way because of the way you act around me so let’s try kissing because I like cuddling and being up against you so I would probably like kissing.”

“Sure we can try kissing,” he said, his voice low.

And just like that Milk grabbed the front of Jaimie’s shirt, pulling him down to reach her mouth. The first kiss was awkward, Jaimie hadn’t quite reached her mouth and some of his lips were above hers. “Hold on,” he said, pulling away from her. “If you are so determined to do it here, let’s do it right.”

He leaned over so he’d be more even, raising her chin with his hand. She felt her strong fingers twine into his hair as his lips pressed against hers. As he kissed her deeper, he wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her onto the tips of her toes.

When he pulled away from her, they nuzzled noses briefly. He held Milk’s hand as they continued through the market.

That’d give that ol’ bitch something to think about.

Boy Things

Bellus stared at the child in front of him. The child wore a lacy pink dress with white frills and stockings. He wore ballet flats that matched the colour of the dress, but with a single white flower at the top of each flower. Bellus looked back at his mother, who urged him forward. He looked at the other women, this child’s mother, who also eagerly moved the child further.

Normally this wouldn’t be a problem. Bellus liked playing with other children, though they usually didn’t like playing with him after he stuffed sand in their shorts or sat primly on their head after a victory.

But Bellus was leery of this child because she was cute. Usually women didn’t have that affect on him, nor any of the children really, and he suspected he would like the child that much more without all the frills and lace.

“Your name’s Val then?” Bellus asked.

The child nodded. “Yep. And you’re Bel?”

“Yes,” Bellus replied.

They wandered away from the leering eyes of their parents. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to play with Val. “What do you like to do?” he asked.

Val shrugged, replying, “Building cities and then smashing them.”

Bel smiled. “That’s what I like doing to.”

They pushed the other kids out of the sandbox and took over. Together they built a large city, using their smallest fingers to carve out windows and doors. They smooth streets with the edges of their hands. They used stones to make cobblestone corridors. They hijacked bugs to make civilians wandering through the city.

And then they sat back, watching their creation for a few moments. Bellus took this time to admire his new friend in the city. He liked Val’s small horns and pink accents. But he liked building something with Val most.

They exchanged smiles.

And then they went to smash.

The bugs began to flee their new city.

The city succumbed to Bellus and Val in moments, collapsing under every step and clawing arm. They made mock screams for the people that lived there. And they continued this devastation until there was only sand and rocks.

Laughing, they collapsed in the sand together.

“You’re a really fun girl,” Bellus said. “All the other girls I hang around with just want to play with tea cups, and I don’t really mind all that much, but I much prefer smashing cities.”

Val didn’t say much in response.

“Can I see your girl parts?” Bellus asked. “My friends tell me it’s how you become best friends. Sharing your secret parts.”

“Only if I can see yours first,” Val said, his eyes suspicious.

The two wandered away from their mothers’ eyes, and Bellus swiftly dropped his drawers. Val looked briefly, but seemed bored. Bellus was a bit offended. He thought his boy parts were quite interesting and mighty. They always had been before.

Val rolled down his stockings and underwear and lifted his dress to reveal similar boy parts.

“Those aren’t girl parts!” Bellus exclaimed.

He had never seen a girl with boy parts before.

Val moved his hips around, his testacies flopping around happily. He asked, “But don’t you like them anyway?”

Hot Dinner Party

Valerius stretched out on the sofa. Bellus had a sneaking suspicion he fell asleep because Valerius had a magazine covering his face, and that wasn’t the more efficient way to read. But Bellus didn’t call him on it, because he knew Valerius was having a hard enough time. It was hard not being snarky.

Bellus had made a decision to cook a dinner for Valerius. Bellus didn’t often show his affection for him, but since Valerius was having a rough time, well, Bellus felt like he needed to something. So he decided to make dinner.

Bellus was regretting it a bit. He had a cookbook open, but something smelt like burning and he wasn’t sure what it was. Also he didn’t want to use any onions because his eyes started watering as he was cutting them and he didn’t want Valerius to think he was crying out of concern for him, because he wasn’t crying out of concern for him. He was just making a dinner to show he was happy Valerius survived the whole ordeal.

He wondered if he was making too much of a fuss over Valerius briefly, and he didn’t stop wondering until a thick burning smell penetrated his nostrils. He saw black smoke curling out of his frying pan, but he couldn’t remember what he even had in the frying pan.

And the fire sort of made it hard to tell too.

So Bellus tossed water on top of the frying pan, only making the fire spread onto the cupboards. Trying to remain calm, he wet a cloth and covered the frying pan. The fire on the frying pan went out, but the fire had spread from cupboard to cupboard, licking the ceiling. Little drips of water burned into the tile on the floor.

Bellus ran his damp hand through his hair, keeping the teal strands out of his face. Was it time to panic yet?

Stretching (revealing a small amount of pale stomach), Valerius stepped into the kitchen. “What’s that smell?” he asked.

“Your dinner?” Bellus asked, with an awkward smile.

Shrugging, seemingly unaware of the fires, he lifted the damp cloth off of the frying pan. “Why is it all black?”

“Well the fire got to it, you see,” Bellus said, trying not to get angry.

“Yes, are you going to do something about it?” Valerius asked. “It’s getting hot.”

“I planned to.”

“Well, chop chop,” Valerius said, clapping his hands.

Bellus’ yellow and blue eyes skim the fire devouring his beautiful kitchen. It was gorgeous and unpractical, though brilliant at burning, apparently. Valerius moved back into the other room, and Bellus heard him flop down on the couch.

He bit his tongue to keep from yelling at Valerius to help. Valerius just survived a horrible event. Bellus couldn’t exactly yell at him for not helping put out a few fires.

And so Bellus went about his business, putting out the fires.

They ultimately ordered dinner in. Together they dined while browsing a kitchen renovation catalogue, discussing the possibilities of their future together, or at least their future in the kitchen.

Sewer Crawl

Katrina woke up. She took a deep breath and then remembered where she was. The thick, smelly sewer air drifted into their tent. She turned her head to see Edward sleeping soundly next to her. She crawled out of the tent, standing up and stretching.

But she heard something. She paused and grabbed her axe, hearing Edward stir in the tent. It was hard in the sewers. They’d hear something tunnels away and think it was a breath away, but it didn’t hurt to be cautious.

Katrina waited a few more moments before going through her routine. She dressed quickly, using a small amount of their water under her arms and then through her brown hair. They couldn’t start a fire without endangering themselves, and she couldn’t exactly use the sewer water to wash up. Edward struggled with the lack of cleanliness, but he’d get used to it. Well, Katrina hoped he’d get used to it.

Edward stirred and got up a few hours later. As he stepped out of the tent, Katrina automatically started packing it up. He followed Katrina’s routine, a bit more extensively. He mixed a sliver of soap in with the water, and eventually he combed the water through his hair.

“Can we sit down and eat?” Edward asked.

“I think it’s a walk and dine situation,” Katrina replied, smiling. “We should keep going.”

Edward said. “At least the tent kept it out but I can't stand this scent! I want to get out soon.”

She laughed. “That sounds great,” she said, handing Edward some carefully covered bread. “And here’s something to keep you going. Try not to breathe in while you eat.”

“I'll try,” Edward replied, offering a smile of his own. “When do you suppose we could leave the sewers?”

“Soon,” Katrina replied. “I really hope soon. I’m not sleeping here again, that’s for sure.”

“I wish we were in a forest or something, then at least maybe I'd have a nice warm lake to bathe in,” Edward said, taking a bite out of his bread. “And I think the air here is making the food taste worse.”

Katrina shushed him. She heard the noise again and raised her axe. Something was coming, and she wondered if it was the smell of the bread that attracted the noise. “Put your bread away,” Katrina ordered. “And stand by the wall, close to me. I don’t know if they’re coming from behind or if they’re heading straight towards us.”

So they waited.

She heard claws on stone.

And they waited.

Edward felt his body tense as he saw the yellow eyes in the distance. He put a hand on Katrina’s arm, motioning towards the eyes. Katrina took a stance, and Edward slunk behind her. He considered pulling out his guitar to play some sort of energizing ballad, but the giant sewer rats scrambling towards them froze him in place.

Katrina took a swing towards, keeping the rats back. Edward could see her brown eyes calculating if it was worth the fight or if they should back out of the sewers.

She sliced one in the back, knocking it into the running, murky water beside them.

Apparently she wanted to fight.

Edward stepped back as she hit two more with one blow of her large axe. She kept two hands on it to keep herself steady, but he’d seen her use it with one hand and a shield before. One of the rats started hissing at her, and Edward saw its yellow eyes watching him. He backed up again, feeling the slick sewer ground beneath his feet.

He watched as the rats began to swarm her, and she hit one clawing his way up her leg with the butt-end of her axe to keep them off. But they began to charge past her towards him. And Edward wished he had pulled out his guitar. He felt the pain as it sunk its crooked teeth into his arm. Katrina ripped the rat off by its tail, leaving a trail of teeth marks across Edward’s forearm.

She didn’t have the time to give him an apologetic look. She tossed the rat in the sewer water and hit another one off her chest. Edward stayed close behind her as the rats began to scatter. Apparently their failure with Edward frightened them off.

He noticed Katrina catching her breath, watching them run away the way they came. Edward held his arm carefully, wondering about infection. He made eye contact with Katrina. “Thank you,” he said.

“Don’t mention it,” she replied.

“No, I truly appreciate it. I froze. I don't know what came over me.”

Katrina smiled and affectionately messed up his hair with her hand. “Come on,” she said, “Let’s get out of here.”

Goddamn Masks

“God damn it!”

Veronica stood two inches away from the television screen, her body slightly hunched over for her nose to be aligned with the exact centre of the screen. A healthy dose of spittle landed on the screen. Both hands tightly gripped her orange N64 controller as she glared at the screen.

“I can’t believe I forgot to play the fucking ocarina to slow down time and I spent all this fucking time just getting there and now I have to go back in time and who the fuck thought ‘Oh I have a great idea, let’s let Link do the same shit over and over again for hours at a time.’”

She paused, biting her lip, as she stared at the screen again. The small link missed the jump which would eventually lead to her entrance. The moon glared down at Link with its happy smile. “And fuck you too moon,” she snarled, a few strands of red hair fleeing her bun. “Now I’m not going to have time to get back to the fucking band and deposit my fucking rupees so I’m going to have to spend another 72 Link-hours just hoarding rupees.”

Veronica quickly played the ocarina to send Link back in time. As the animation played, she flopped down on a couch, continuing, “Or I can do one of those fucking waste-of-time mask quests because God forbid I play a game where I don’t have do every single fucking quest.”

She remembered to play the song which slows things down, and the animation repeated. “Because I haven’t seen that goddamn clip a million times,” she stated.

She decided on doing the quest that took 72 hours, where you had to talk to the married couple at the exact moments to make it work properly. “I’ll do all this fucking work and then I’ll go back in time and they’ll never be happy again, ever. Because they can’t be happy together if I’m not fucking there but they take up too much time to constantly make sure they’re happy so what’s the fucking point is what I want to know aside from the stupid god damn mask I need to complete the useless connection.”

And then, while collecting rupees through hitting Poes on Epona, “Fucking forgot to finish the god damn mask quest.”

Veronica threw her controller on the couch, the edge of it bouncing off the couch. “Fucking forget it,” she said. “The god damn, creepy-ass moon can crash into Link’s Earth for all I care.”

She sighed, Link sitting down on the ground from inactivity. She said, wringing her hands in frustration, “But I don’t want to play anything online because I fucking hate socializing. I’m playing goddamn videogames so I don’t have to waste my time talking to people. Whose big fucking idea was it to combine them, anyway?”

Veronica picked up the controller to get Link running again. “Fucking morons,” she muttered.
